This is an index-tracking fund that puts the large majority of its money directly into stocks or bonds that make up its benchmark index. The remaining portion may be held in cash, short-term instruments, or other financial contracts that help the fund stay closely aligned with that index. Some of these supporting holdings may be managed by the same firm or its related companies.
