An Inside Day is a bar whose high is below the previous high and whose low is above the previous low, so its whole range sits inside the prior bar. Toby Crabel studied it as a sign of contracting volatility: the market pauses and is undecided, and a breakout above the high or below the low of the inside day often starts the next directional move.
