On-Balance Volume, created by Joe Granville, adds the day's volume on up days and subtracts it on down days, building a running total that shows whether volume is flowing into or out of a stock; Granville held that volume precedes price. Rising OBV confirms an advancing price, and rising OBV with a flat price can signal a coming breakout.
